Seattle, Washington, USA (8/25-29/2009)

Home of 416 Starbucks coffee shops, Seattle is a wonderful city and we had glorious weather.

Seattle is defined by water and the great Pacific Northwest with its own favor of ‘tourist’ attractions. Our son, Alden, was with us and we started with a classic ride up the 520-foot high Space Needle. From up there we saw all of Seattle and Mt. Rainer.

We then experienced the Experience Music Project spending time with Jimi Hendrix and other rock and roll history makers. Seattle has had a big part in making rock and roll music history.

A highlight of Seattle (on Pat’s birthday) was our ride on Ride the Ducks, an amphibious WWII vintage vehicle with our fun-loving driver (Captain Helen on Wheels).

We had a great time rocking and rolling through the streets of Seattle and then splashing into Lake Union for a lake ride and close-up view of the lake house filmed in the movie Sleepless in Seattle (see photos).

Of course, no visit to Seattle would be complete without a visit to Pike Place Market where Pat and Alden had a coffee at the world's first Starbucks and we watched the fish being thrown across the counter for the amusement of passersby.

Pike Place Market was opened in 1907 making it one of the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the U.S. It extends across seven city blocks, filling 23 multilevel buildings with 600 vendors.

Then it was off to Pioneer Square for an underground tour where the new Seattle was built on top of the burned down old town. Next we visited the Seattle Aquarium - a wonderful place full of displays of local sea life. Don’t miss the playful otters! (see photo).

Finally, we took a couple of ferry rides to Bainbridge Island and then to Blake Island where we had a wonderful salmon bake and native Indian show at Tillicum Village. Wonderful time for our family playing with our son in a wonderful city.

On the way to our next stop we had a nice visit with our nephew and his family (Jerry, Shawny, and 2-year old Connor Tolzman) and visited the very quaint town of Snohomish that claims to be the antique capital of the Pacific Northwest (with merit – 12 antique shops on a short main street).
