Hvar Dalmatian Island, Croatia (6/22-24/2009)

Hvar is one of the greenest Croatian Dalmatian Islands with patches of lavender, rosemary, and heather.

Hvar Island boosts to have the most sunshine days in Croatia. Well, not so much for us. We had two days of rain before an absolutely beautiful sunny day.

Built in the 13th century, Hvar town is very nice with a fortress above the old town. The town square (Trg Sveti Stjepana – see photo) is one of the largest in Croatia and the first night we rocked out at a concert of a local band that is now well known across Croatia.

We took a small boat to Palmizana (sounds like the cheese you put on spaghetti) on the Pakleni Islands (see photo). What a wonderful place!

Hvar Island and especially Hvar town is one of the most popular destinations in the Adriatic. During the season (May to September) it can be very busy, especially during August when large numbers of Italians visit.

Hvar was relatively cheap, without an extensive tourist infrastructure, and it attracted a lot of young people. However, this is changing as large five star hotels are being built and the standard of living in Croatia is rising.

The food in Croatia’s Dalmatian Islands and Coast can be summed up by two main choices - meat or fish or if you want something different... fish or meat. Italian influence from centuries of Venetian rule is also present with pastas and get this: some of the best restaurant pizza Pat and I have ever had.

On this trip, we island hopped the Croatia Dalmatian Islands. We took a ferry from Brac to Hvar Island.

Brac Island, Croatia (6/18-22/2009)

Brac Island is a pretty Dalmatian Island with lots to enjoy and discover.

Brac Island, the largest of the Dalmatian Islands in Croatia, has a main export of white marble. Brac’s lustrous white marble stone was used in building the U.S. White House in Washington DC.

Beaches here are covered with small white stones and shaded by pine trees - pretty nice.

We took the ferry from Split to Brac and played a day on the white stone beaches around Supetar

Staying in a private apartment in a neighborhood in Supetar afforded Wayne the opportunity to sit with the local men who gathered every afternoon for a serious contest of bocce ball. The private rooms in Brac, Croatia, share a nice kitchen where you can relax and fix snacks.

We took a day trip to beautiful Milna before going to the famous Zlatni Rat Beach in Bol

Bol's Zlatni Rat Beach is the beach you see pictured in all the advertisements for Brac and Croatia (see photo).

We got caught in a thunderstorm one night but were able to go to a neighborhood restaurant (2 doors down) and talk the night away with people from all other the world. Brac's Bol town is very pretty town to explore.

Split & Trogir, Croatia (Dalmatian Coast)

Split & Trogir, Croatia (Dalmatian Coast) (6/16-18/2009)

Split has an UNESCO World Heritage site Roman palace built in the 4th century. The powerful Roman emperor, Diocletian, retired here. Trogir is a medieval gem not to be missed.

Split is the second largest city in Croatia. Split once was just a jumping off point to the Dalmatian Islands. Now it is cleaning up and is becoming much more.

Split comes alive at night along the plam-lined Riva harbor side promenade on a beautiful summer night.

A large percentage of the world’s models come from Split – tall, thin… you know and we saw evidence of this.

Inside Split's Roman palace, something like 3,000 people live and work. It is packed with restaurants, bars, and shops. Go to the Golden Gate and rub the left toe of the Gregorius of Nin statue - they believe it brings you luck.

We took a boat to another UNESCO World Heritage site, the beautiful medieval town of Trogir, considered a town museum because of its preserved architecture from many cultures dating back 2000 years. Trogir is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe (see photos).

Compacted onto a tiny island connected to the mainland by a bridge, narrow medieval streets wind through the enchanting town of Trogir revealing hidden restaurants and eye-catching galleries.

A wide seaside promenade snakes around Trogir, culminating in a charming port full of sailboats waiting to take you to the islands of Drvenik Mali and Drvenik Veli with their pristine sand beaches and secluded coves.

Stretching out from the main land of Trogir to either side is an infinite number of beautiful beaches as well. It is a fascinating place to just wander and also contains a range of accommodation.

Trogir is served by frequent buses that make the 20-mile trip from Split.

Interesting start of our visit to Split and Trogir... we flew from Athens to Split on budget airline SkyEurope. We arrived into Split at 11:30 at night with no room reservation. Pat talked to a drink stand vendor who made a call and we got a room in the most central part of Split.
