One of
ancient Rome’s most amazing engineering achievements is Hadrian’s Wall located
in northern England – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a very popular tourism
attraction in northern England.
Hiking Hadrian's Wall - Great Britain |
Taking about 15,000 men, the 73-mile
long Hadrian’s Wall was constructed
in about 6 years finished in AD128 – that is almost 2,000 years ago! Done while
Emperor Hadrian was in power, it was done as a barrier from the Scottish
Picts tribes. About every 5 miles, a fort was built and manned by soldiers. Every
mile, in between the forts, were smaller watchtowers (milecastles). A tribute to
Roman construction, much of the wall still stands today except for places where
stones where removed to construct roads.

The A69 and
B6318 roads follow much of Hadrian’s Wall and there are many places to visit. A
great place to experience and learn about Hadrian’s Wall is at the nicely done visitor
center at Housesteads Roman Fort &
Museum. In addition to the wall, ruins of an auxiliary fort are located at
Housesteads located near the town of Haydon Bridge. You can use Post Code NE47
6NW to help locate it (note: this
post code takes you about 1 mile east of the visitor’s center).

There is a
bit of a hike up to the site where you should start with the museum and watch
the film. You can learn about the Romans and their time in Britain as well as how
life was conducted for nearly 400 years during the Roman occupation.
You can climb on Hadrian’s Wall and walk among the ruins that have explanations you can read.

Historians
debate theories of why Hadrian’s Wall was constructed ranging from defense to
immigration control and just projecting Roman power. Many people hike along the
wall.
Important driving tip: Because many of the roads in
England are smaller country roads with many confusing roundabouts, getting lost
is not hard. In fact, it can be fun if you can get back on track.
Here is a wonderful tip... Make sure you have GPS
- if from your car rental company ask for a lesson. The postal code in
Great Britain typically has enough information to direct you to your hotel or
destination. So, look up postal codes for your hotels and destinations so you
can enter them in as you go through your day of explorations. We used a
centrally located church or hotel for the villages. Sometimes the GPS asks to
confirm the street name and number, so also having an address helps. Also,
often just putting in the town/village name will take you to the right
direction and you can follow signs to the town center.
