Nelson,
Marlborough Wine Region, &
Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand (11/28-30/2009)

Absolutely beautiful and fun region of New Zealand!

Known to be the artsy and alternative living (nice way to say naked people) area of New Zealand, Nelson is also the gateway to the spectacular Abel Tasman National Park (a jewel with its beautiful golden beaches and forest walks) and Marlborough (best wine region in New Zealand).

Visiting Abel Tasman National Park, we took a boat ride along the beautiful coast and a 2-hour hike in the forest followed by a visit to the beaches in Torrent Bay and Kaiteriteri (see photos) - a wonderful day!

Nelson is located in the north of New Zealand’s South Island and is known as having the most sunny days in all of New Zealand. Nelson is a very nice town with pretty parks and nice restaurants (see photos).

The next day we drove through Marlborough Sound (the narrow and very windy Queen Charlotte Sound Drive).

We then enjoyed the Marlborough Wine Region wineries (located between the towns of Blenheim and Renwick).

With 100 wineries, we choose to visit some of the better ones recommended by a local wine distributor. We visited Montana, Mt. Riley, Alan Scott, Cloudy Bay, Herzog, and Wairau River where we had a wonderful gourmet lunch (see photos).

The Marlborough Wine Region produces over half of New Zealand’s wines and is considered one of the world’s premier wine producing regions. These wines are great.

Marlborough is internationally known for its chardonnay and sauvignon blanc wines, and more recently, pinot gris, riesing, and gewurztraminer.

Wine Tip: go out right now and purchase a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from a winery from the New Zealand Marlborough Wine region - it will forever change your opinion of Sauvignon Blanc wine!

Finally we stayed in Picton at the Juggler’s Inn (complete with juggling toys) preparing for our ferry crossing to New Zealand’s North Island.

On the way to Nelson we drove under the Overhang Rock where the Buller River floods 30 feet high several times a year and walked across the longest swing bridge in New Zealand, Buller Gorge Swinging Bridge (see photos).
