Evora Tomar Nazare Castelo de Vide, Portugal (5/21-23/2016)

If you plan to visit a medieval town in Portugal, we recommend Evora and Obidos (click here to read about Obidos).

Evora

We liked Evora, one of Portugal’s most beautifully preserved medieval towns with plenty of interesting sites to visit, winding streets to wander, restaurants, and a variety of types of accommodations. Its quaint cobbled streets, lined with traditional painted houses, are wonderful to explore.

Because of its well-preserved old town center partially enclosed by 14-century medieval walls including a Roman Temple, Evora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Evora’s beauty is augmented by the whitewashed houses decorated with azulejos (painted ceramic tiles) and wrought-iron balconies that date back 200-400 years ago.

Tomar, Portugal
Tomar is famous for the being the headquarters of the Knight Templar who had enormous power in Europe in the 12th to 16th centuries.

A visit to the magnificent Convento de Cristo clearly shows the wealth.

You can drive up to the Convento de Cristo with limited parking saving same effort and time to explore the old town below. Do wander around Tomar’s pedestrian historic center centered around the main street (Rua Sepa Pinto).

Although we choose to stay in Tomar, we would recommend making it a stop along the way.

Castelo de Vide is a nice hillside medieval town but not our favorite.

Beach Nazare Portugal
Beach - Nazare, Portugal
Nazare is one of the most picturesque beach resorts in this area of Portugal.

It makes for a fun stop to see Nazare but is pretty dead out of the summer season (July and August) when the beach is packed with multi-colored umbrellas and the town is jammed with seafood restaurants and bars.
