Beautiful Sorrento Italy
Sorrento Italy is a very picturesque town located on Italy’s famed Alfalfa coast overlooking the Bay of Naples with a beautiful Old Town to explore on top of steep cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas. The Old Town center of Sorrento is compact and easy to explore by walking. Most of the interesting sights can be completed in a few hours with the following the following self-guided walking tour of Sorrento starting at Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s main piazza. If you are coming from the port down below you can reach Piazza Tasso taking a small bus (2Euro/person) from the port up the substantial cliff.

Sorrento's Cathedral
From Piazza Tasso, it is a few minutes to walk up Viale Enrico Caruso to take in the view down to the dramatic "Valley of the Mills" in the gorge below. From Piazza Tasso, start your walk to explore Sorrento’s old town on Corso Italia, Sorrento’s main shopping street with many fashionable shops and boutiques. The old town part of Corso Italia starts at the statue of Sorrento’s famous poet Torquato Tasso that the Piazza Tasso is named for and you will likely see many people headed down this street. Drop into some of the stores and take a take a look at Italian fashions and interesting souvenirs. You will pass by Sorrento’s Cathedral (Duomo di Sorrento) known for its triple-tiered bell tower and elegant majolica clock.

Via San Cesareo - Sorrento
At the end of Corso Italia, turn right and then turn right again on Via San Cesareo, a very charming historic street - one of the oldest streets and our favorite street in Sorrento. It is lined with interesting local shops and restaurants. It is not very wide but is a great place to do some shopping and makes for some great people watching while stopping for a beer, glass of wine, or a meal. Quaint restaurants can be found down the narrow side alleys.

Corso Italia - Sorrento’s main shopping street
Corso Italia, Sorrento’s main shopping streetFrom Via San Cesareo look for the sign “To Villa Communale” and take Via Reginaldo Giulian down to the Villa Comunale for a wonderful terrace overlooking the Gulf and port. Via Reginaldo Giulian is a beautiful street with great Italian shopping and restaurant opportunities. From the terrace at Villa Comunale you can see the beach clubs and seafood restaurants below along the ocean in Marina Piccola. You can take the elevator down or walk the zig zag walkway down to the port to right. Before returning to the port you can walk to the left to Marina Grande, Sorrento’s fishing village where locals and tourists go for a seafood meal overlooking the ocean.

The best time to visit Sorrento is between April and October, when temperatures are comfortable and the chance of rain is low. Early spring and late autumn can also be quite pleasant for those seeking a milder climate without the summer heat. Sorrento gets busy during the height of summer.
