Orcas Island (San Juan Islands), Washington, USA (8/17-18/2009) - We are island hopping by ferry again! - this time the San Juan Islands with a car first visiting the beautiful Orcas Island.

A major travel magazine rated Orcas Island as one of the top 10 islands in the world. We have been to lot of lovely islands all over the world and Orcas Island is now one of our favorites. It should be a must visit if you travel this way. We stayed in the charming village of Eastsound (the largest town on the island). From Eastsound we explored breathtaking small Orcas Island where we could drive across in 20 minutes.

We spent one day in a breathtaking beautiful place - the Moran State Park. In the early 1900’s, Mr. Moran made a lot of money in shipbuilding. By the age of 57, he was burned out and wanted to enjoy life without so much stress. He developed much of Moran State Park and later donated it to the State of Washington. The park has bountiful wonders (see photos) - gorgeous hikes through pine forests and along blue lakes including 100-foot Cascade Falls and places to swim in Cascade Lake.

We also picked and ate wild blackberries and visited the ‘hippy’ hamlet of Olga (also quite wonderful) as well as Deer Harbor and Ship Harbor where we watched eagles soar down for fish (see photo).

Finally we had the pleasure to visit a place listed in the famous book 1000 Places to Visit Before You Die - the remote Turtleback Farm Inn.
