A fun thing to do in Los Angeles is to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Walk of Fame runs a little over a mile along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of Vine Street in Hollywood, California. More than 2,400 five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars are embedded in the sidewalks (see photo). The Walk of Fame is a popular tourist destination with a reported over 10 million visitors a year.

As of January 2013, the Walk of Fame consisted of 2,488 stars with about 20 new stars added each year. Of all the stars on the Walk of Fame, 47% have been awarded in the motion pictures category, 24% in television, 17% in audio recording, 10% in radio, and less than 2% in the live performance category. The stars bear the names of a mix of actors, directors, producers, musicians, musical & theatrical groups, fictional characters, and others.

Interesting fact... The original selection committees chose to recognize some entertainers in multiple categories so they have multiple stars. Gene Autry is the only honoree with stars in all five categories.

We stayed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at the famous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (see below). We did walked the entire length and liked the area around Grauman’s Chinese Theatre the best. We enjoyed the tour of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre that does most of Hollywood’s premiers (see photo). This is where celebrities have put their hands and feet in the cement (see photos). You can still see a movie at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre sitting where celebrities have sat for over 75 years since 1927.

Some other fun things to do on the Hollywood Walk of Fame are: Hollywood Wax Museum, Riley’s Believe It or Not, Madame Tussauds, and a great entertainment complex called the Hollywood & Highland Center where you can see great shows and movies. Many people take one of the various Hollywood tours to learn more about this historic area and go see where the stars live.

We stayed at a great place in LA! The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (see photo) is located on the best part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame across the street from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre with many things to do. Since 1927, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is perhaps Hollywood’s most famous hotel (see photo). The first Academy Awards took place here in 1929 so the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is called the birthplace of the Academy Awards and has been the playground of celebrities including Clark Gable and Carole Lombard who used to come and have secret rendezvous’.

Marilyn Monroe lived at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for 2 years and posed for her first commercial ad for toothpaste while lounging on the pool's diving board (see photo). It is said upwards of 35 ghosts, including Marilyn’s, wander this grand old hotel. Although it would have been fun, we didn’t see (or feel) any ghosts.

  1. I've never "done" Hollywood, but you certainly make it attractive. We're all fans of numerous celebrities on the Walk of Fame and it would be fun to see their stars. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel looks amazing as well!
