With a rich history, Walvis Bay has been a sea port for ships because of its natural deepwater harbor and being the only one of any size along this area of Africa. Today Walvis Bay is a tourism center of Namibia due to having the tallest sand dunes in the world along its coast (see photo), interesting bird watching, and harbor boat tours.

In Walvis Bay, we choose to be adventurous taking a 4X4 day trip to Sandwich Harbor to experience the huge sand dunes and learn about this interesting desert-like environment. First we drove by one of the largest considerations of flamingos (see photo) in the world and learned about one of Namibia’s largest industries (salt production).

Our 4X4 trip out of Walvis Bay took us to Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park where we had a unique experience to drive over the dunes that reach heights of 300 feet and rise up from the pretty beach (see photo). It was exciting to go up and down them like a roller coaster.

We saw a jackal (see photo). They survive in this hostile environment by feeding on the dead seals when they wash ashore. The vegetation and insects in this area have a fascinating story of survival. In other areas of Namibia, amazingly these sand dunes rise to over 1,000 feet.

Another interesting feature of Walvis Bay is the huge natural lagoon with numerous seabirds on and around it. Also, catamaran cruises of Walvis Bay’s harbor offer the opportunity to see seals, dolphins, sea birds, and, when in season, whales. In addition, it is very convenient for kayak trips to Pelican Point and the adventurous can go and climb Dune 7, just outside town.
