South Miami Beach, Florida (4/25-30/2009)

Miami's South Beach embodies art deco, fashion, celebrity, hip beach culture, nightlife, and wealth. We love the wonderful beach and fun things to do.

South Miami Beach was a short ‘resting’ stop before our trans-Atlantic cruise to the Mediterranean. We didn’t see movie stars or Miami Vice. We did have beautiful weather, enjoyed the cool art deco buildings, and had a wonderful visit with our friends (Hal and Corrine).

Opened in 1913, South Miami's sweet stone crabs at the famous Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant were wonderful - a must while in Miami's South Beach.

We liked walking along Ocean Drive, the easternmost street in South Miami Beach from south of First to 15th Street. It is crowded with restaurants and shops.

We also had dinner at and very much liked the fun romantic Española Way, which runs from Collins Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue. It was conceived as The Historic Spanish Village, modeled after the romantic Mediterranean villages found in France and Spain. Today Espanola Way consists of art galleries, restaurants, and quirky shops.

Miami's South Beach has an active club and bar scene hosting more than 150 clubs and other venues, many of which close at 4:30 AM.

We spent a day on a spectacular beach during spring break – can’t help but notice those college hard bodies at play.

Lincoln Road - South Miami, Florida
Some history... Miami's South Beach was developed starting in 1910 and rebuilt in art deco style after the 1926 hurricane destroyed much of the area. In both daytime and at nightfall, the South Beach section of Miami Beach is a major entertainment destination with hundreds of nightclubs, restaurants, boutiques and hotels. Lincoln Road is an open-air pedestrian mall, considered South Beach's premiere shopping area.
