Italy (Pompeii, Pomero, Taormina, & Naples) (5/16-18/2009)
We had three very memorable Italian ports of call on our Mediterranean trans-Atlantic cruise.
We first landed at Pomero in Sicily and visited beautiful Taormina. Taormina is an absolutely charming hillside village with a famous coastline, the spectacular Isola d’Elba (see photos).

We then went to Naples on the stunning Amalfi Coast. One of Naples' claims to fame is claiming to have invented pizza. We had some Naples' pizza and believe that the world outside Naples has bettered the recipe. Naples is an energetic city with loud traffic. The heart of Naples' city, the colorful Spaccanapoli, was once an enclave of monumental palazzos and magnaificient churches.
Spaccanapoli is now filled with time-battered tenements and workshops with Vespa-filled streets and vendors who hawk just about everything. Naples was once the seat of a powerful, independent kingdom for more than 500 years, and drew Europe's finest architects and artists.
Outside of Naples, we spent most the day exploring the famous ruins of Pompeii, an opulent ancient Roman port city where rich Romans and even Emperors lived. The Pompeiian homes, wine shops, public houses, and even a bordello buried under ash after a violent volcano eruption in 79 AD and excavated in the 1700’s, offer a glimpse into wealthy Roman life 1,900 years ago at the peak of their power. Nearly 2.5 million tourists visit yearly but Pompeii is large enough to provide quiet corners. See the photo of a young pregnant lady attempting to hide before dying.
