Cadiz, Ibiza, & Almeria, Spain (5/12-14/2009)
We had three interesting Spanish ports of call on our trans-Atlantic cruise.
First, Cadiz, where the Spanish explorers left Spain to explore (plunder) the New World. Cadiz is a beautiful city with narrow twisted streets lined with beautiful houses opening to lovely plazas. Surrounded by ocean and parks, a day of wandering was delightful.
Picturesque Cadiz, said to be one of the oldest cities in western Europe founded about 3,000 years ago. Columbus departed from Cadiz on two voyages of discovery of the Americas. Cadiz became the wealthiest port in Western Europe from the gold and silver imports. We also took a ferry to Puerto de Santa Maria, an old fishing town.

Then we went to Almeria in southeast Spain. Famous for being the site of the filming of the movie Lawrence of Arabia, Almeria is also the filming site of many US Westerns and other movies staring Clint Eastwood and California's ex-Governor Arnold.
In Almeria, we visited a hilltop village, Mojacar, before climbing the hill to the beautifully restored Moorish fortress Alcazaba. Wayne got us lost (again?) and Pat led us down a cliff (shortcut!).

Our third Spanish port of call, we visited the party/beach island of Ibiza. Less of a party today and no beach visit because it rained but Ibiza has more nightlife (discos) than anywhere in Europe. We explored the UNESCO designed d’Alt Vila, a beautiful walled castle area with our new friends, David and Anna, who are professional photographers.
