Ushuaia, Strait of Magellan, & Tierra del Fuego, Argentina (2/5/2010)

Welcome to Ushuaia, the southernmost city on earth!

Also, welcome to the famous Strait of Magellan as well as Tierra del Fuego, the Land of Fire, so named because the indigenous people here went naked in this very cold place near Antarctica and had continuous fires everywhere (even in their boats) to keep warm.

Just 600 miles north of Antarctica, the remote windswept frontier town of Ushuaia, with glacier peaked mountains in the background, has character and is surprising cosmopolitan with a population of about 70,000 hardy soles (see photo). The summer flowers were beautiful and we found an interesting outdoor women’s mural with a nude (see photos).

Although we had beautiful weather, Ushuaia experiences extreme winds and weather. Established in the important Strait of Magellan, Ushuaia is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of the island of Tierra del Fuego bounded on the north by the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle Channel.

On our single day visit, we took a 40-minute ride into the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego (Tierra del Fuego National Park) on the El Tren del Fin del Mundo (Train of The End of the World), the southernmost train in the world (see photos). The trip took us though some beautiful countryside but was slow and a bit boring. We wished for some Disneyland-type entertainment like a simulated prisoner escape, Indian attack, or something - you can take the boy out of Southern California but it’s hard to take Southern California out of the boy.

(Train of the End of the World)
The small El Tren del Fin del Mundo (Train of The End of the World) railroad was constructed by Argentina’s most dangerous prisoners to bring wood back to the town. The prison was established here in Ushuaia to prop up Argentina’s claim to this southernmost part of South America due to its importance in world commerce. The prisoners also built most of the port that we also explored.
