Nile River Felucca Boat Trip, Egypt (5/4-5/2010) - A Felucca boat trip on the Nile River is an unique experience of a lifetime… 2 full days of sailing, lazing, and living on the Nile River like they have done for centuries.

A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat with no motor consisting of one or two lateen sails (see photos). We had a larger one with 12 passengers and a crew of two or three people.

We sailed for two days from Aswan to Luxor making stops along the way for visits to local Nubian homes, swimming in the Nile River, meals on the felucca boat, late night dinner on the beach, and dancing around a bonfire (see photos).

It was fun to sleep on the covered cushioned deck of our felucca boat along the side of the Nile River and wonderful to feel the breeze during the day while gracefully sailing along the Nile River. We had a chance to meet many local Nubian people (see photo).

Despite being made obsolete by motorboats and upscale ferries, feluccas are still in active use as a means of transport in Nile-adjacent cities. They are especially popular among tourists who can enjoy their quieter and calmer mood than motorboats have to offer.

  1. Thanks for posting this blog, Nile River is the best feature of Egyptian landscape apart from the numerous historical landmarks placed in every nook and corner of the country. It is the longest river in the world crossing 11 countries in its entire path. In the desert ridden area of African geography, Nile is the source of water, life, food and also for tourism. My father have booked tickets from "Egypt trip Center" for our family members to visit Nile Cruse. Egypt trip Center is a travel company in Egypt.
