Naxos Greek Island, Greece (5/31-6/4/2009)
Naxos is one of the largest and greenest Greek Islands with a wonderful main town (Chora), many beautiful beaches, and a population of only 18,000.
Naxos' Chora (main old town) is a maze of winding charming streets with archways, shops, and restaurants – just plain wonderful day or night!
The Portara (see photo), a massive marble doorway crowning a hilltop, is Naxos' famous landmark. It is all that remains of an unfinished 6th-century B.C. temple to Apollo.

We took an ATV 4-wheeler and explored the stunning almost deserted Naxos' beaches (Kastraki, Plaka, and Pirgaki). Little bit of nudity (alright!). These beaches feature lots of sandy wide-open beaches with a Greek Taverna for lunch - we love eating our way through the Greek Islands. Too much fun!
We also rented a car and toured the villages of Naxos. The wonderful hilltop village of Apiranthos has marble streets, walls, steps, and houses - basically marble everywhere (amazing!).
We took a regular speed ferry to the Greek Island of Naxos from the Greek Island of Ios seeing other Greek Islands of Sirikos and Felegandros. These Greek Island ferries are nice!

You did a nice job of showcasing Naxos well. Kefalonia, Ithaca and the Ionian islands are actually the greenest due to their high rainfall...but I love that you've highlighted the tradition here
ReplyDeleteNexos looks charming. I felt like i was walking on those stone streets with you!
