Panama City, Panama (4/12/2009)

Although small, Panama City has great influence because it is the Pacific Ocean start of the Panama Canal.

Also, one-third of Panama’s 3.3 million population lives in Panama's Capital city of Panama City.

Built in the 1670’s, Panama City was the first Spanish settlement on the Pacific Ocean and was sacked by the pirate Henry Morgan. Panama City was rebuilt and later flourished during the California gold rush and even more with the building of the Panama Canal.

We toured the old, new, and Colonial areas of the city. Although they encourage foreigners to come live here and are building new condos, etc. like mad, we decided that this is not where we want to live (rains 9 months/year, hot & humid now, mosquitoes in May).

Panama City is a very multicultural place, with large populations from many different parts of the world. Spanish is spoken by most, and many speak some form of English.

Little known (or cared about) facts... authentic Panama hats are made in Ecuador from the Tequila plant and Panama means “abundant fish” in an indigenous language.
