Oregon Central Coast - Tillamook, Depoe Bay & Newport, Oregon, USA (9/5-9/7/2009)

Tillamook is famous for cheese and Newport for it’s aquarium. We liked much more in Oregon's beautiful central coast. See why:

The Tillamook Cheese Factory is the largest maker of cheese in the western United States making 167,000 pounds of cheese a day using 1.7 million pounds of milk daily. Visiting the Tillamook factory is interesting – we loved the fresh ice cream.

Better yet, our drive around the beautiful Three Cape Loop was amazing. We climbed up into the Cape Meares Lighthouse (it was turned off), saw the Octopus Tree where Indians hung their burial canoes that formed a very odd tree.

We also visited the delightful seaside towns of Oceanside and Pacific City where we had dinner on the beach (see photos).

Passing through Lincoln City, the most visited destination on the Oregon coast, we drove over the D River (listed on the Gingess Book of Records as the shortest river in the world – only 435 feet).

We also passed through Depoe Bay after a storm and saw the Spouting Horn shooting up ocean spray in all its gory and then had lunch overlooking beautiful Arch Rock (see photos).

Newport was just plain fun. We stayed in historic Nye Beach, a charming seaside hamlet, and played at the Oregon Coast Aquarium (a wonderful place to visit), the Newport Bayfront (a fishing/clamming row with fun things like Ripley’s Believe It or Not), and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and Natural Area.

  1. Loved your post. . .my first trip with a girlfriend out of college was to the Oregon coast and we visited the Tillamook Cheese factory (even way back then, a huge facility) and then we visited a tuna fish processing plant. . .OMG, I couldn't eat canned tuna for years after that experience and hadn't thought of it until reading your post today. Thanks for a good memory and chuckle!

  2. I have barely scratched the surface of Oregon's coast and would love to return. I understand they make some pretty good wine there as well.

  3. It has been so very long since I've been to Oregon that I can't even recall if I've been to Newport. But I do remember loving the Oregon coastline and I'd love to return.
